CANTERA began working in the neighborhood of Jorge Dimitrov in 2002 with the hopes of improving the quality of life for youth living in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Managua. By providing personal development workshops, cultural expression groups and other recreational activities, we hope to create a community that is based on equality and positive moral and ethical values.

Over the years, we have slowly grown in the number of young people that enter our organization by allowing youth to participate in dance groups, theater, painting classes, Tae Kwon Do, English classes, after-school assistance and sports teams such as baseball and soccer for both girls and boys. As with the other youth programs, we also promote the importance of protecting the environment and strive to increase awareness through our Ecological Brigades. To further environmental awareness and education, we have also built a small community garden as an opportunity for the adolescents and youth to learn about gardening.
